Should I eat After 6 PM?
Should you eat after 6 PM? The general consensus is that if you want to lose weight (should be fat not weight) you don't eat after 6 PM. Many "experts" have suggested this multiple times stating that your metabolism slows in the evening and you will gain fat if you eat after 6 PM. The reality is that eating the correct foods after 6 PM is better for fat and weight loss than not eating at all! So where did the advice not to eat after 6 PM come from?
Years ago, before we had such easy access to fast food and to an abundance of high sugar/high fat foods, individuals would eat a balanced meal of whole foods; often times after 6 PM. When we think of the 1950's we envision an apple pie on the window sill cooling to be consumed after dinner. Why was it okay then and not now? Because the food we choose to eat after 6 PM now is unhealthy food and often filled with sugar and fat.
Once it became evident that individuals were gaining weight AND eating after 6 PM it was believed that there must have been a correlation between the two and that eating after 6 PM would result in people gaining weight and getting fatter. The experts weighed in immediately and started to advise that eating after 6 PM was bad. Now, years later, it has been shown that eating after 6 PM, when the correct foods are consumed, does not lead to weight gain the experts decided it would be too difficult to advise only to eat certain foods after 6 PM and to simply just say "don't eat after 6 PM".
The truth is eating protein after 6 PM from good sources like Chicken, Eggs and Protein supplements can and will lead to weight LOSS, not weight gain. Protein helps balance blood sugar and sustains the body's need for building material for when most recovery happens, while we are asleep. Consuming protein in the evening will also help curb the desire for those tempting sweets as well. At least one additional meal of nearly straight protein will help you lean out and feel better.
