How to make protein easy!

The more nutrition coaching we do here in-store, the more we see clients who are surprised at the amount of protein we coach them to consume each day. The ideal daily amount of protein you should consume depends on a variety of factors, but there is a high probability that what you’re eating through whole food protein sources is falling short of your needs. It can seem overwhelming at first, but the great news is there are plenty of ways to make sure you get the correct amount of protein! Here are some things to consider.

Let’s say you should consume, for example, 150 grams of protein per day. If you were to try to eat 150 grams of protein over 5 meals, you’d need 30 grams of protein each time you ate. I don’t know about you, but I’m not eating a chicken breast every 3 hours. I just don’t have the appetite! In that case, I may have a couple of protein shakes to ensure I get the amount I need. I will have a protein shake at 10:00am and then again at 3:00pm. That means I only need 90 grams of protein between my breakfast, lunch, and dinner and that is a lot easier to make work.

Most people are at least somewhat familiar with the concept of eating smaller meals more frequently throughout the day. However, not as many people know why. If you break up your meals into smaller portions and eat them throughout the day and if those meals don’t contain enough protein then the purpose is in large part defeated. This is because one of protein’s most important functions is to stabilize and help balance your blood sugar levels. Once your blood sugar levels are under check and kept regular, not only will your energy levels be better throughout the day but you will also begin burning more fat!

Let us emphasize: you never want to skip meals, rather replace them. If you eat breakfast at 7:00 am, make sure the breakfast has a protein source in it! If not, mix up a protein shake to go with whatever else you’re eating. Then, at 10:00 am you can have another meal or snack provided you have a carbohydrate, fat and again a protein source. The idea is to split up your feedings every 3-4 hours and to ensure you always eat protein each feeding whether it is chicken, cottage cheese or a protein shake. It is better to consume multiple protein shakes per day and consume the correct amount of protein rather than just leaving it to chance or missing out because you did not feel hungry.

If you’ve hesitated to take protein shakes before whether you weren’t sure what type to get or perhaps were worried you’d gain weight, stop in Max Muscle Davis County in Bountiful and Layton TODAY and ask for a sample of one of our protein powders.
