Is Protein really THAT important?

Perhaps the biggest area for improvement regarding gaining lean muscle and losing fat is the consumption of protein. We often find while working with our clients in our stores that many of them do not consume sufficient protein to achieve their health and wellness goals. How do we know this? We use our InBody Body Composition machine to assess progress.

Over the years, we have become very accustomed to hearing “but if I eat protein I will get bulky, right?” If you have asked yourself this, you are not alone but the truth is, protein will actually help you lose weight, not gain it! Protein is the most important of the three macro nutrients; protein, carbohydrates and fats. Protein is used for a variety of functions in the body ranging from allowing your body to replicate new healthy cells to helping form hormones. Finally, protein is used to create lean muscle and a faster metabolism to help you stay lean and strong. You may be asking yourself right now, “but how will I know how much protein do I need?” We can help you determine that right in our store!

Protein is made up of amino acids. It is important to understand that some of these amino acids have nothing to do with muscle. Some will help your body create enzymes needed to digest food, others will help in growing hair and nails, and others play a role in determining how your body is utilizing energy. The only place your body stores these important amino acids is in the muscle tissue, so if you are not consuming enough protein your body will pull them from your muscle and therefore will store more fat. Consuming a correct and sufficient amount of protein will improve body composition by giving your body permission to continually burn unwanted fat!

The other thing to keep in mind is that not all proteins are created equally. Most protein sources contain all the amino acids your body needs but your body doesn’t necessarily utilize them all the same. This is at least one reason why protein supplementation is important. Our protein supplements are easily absorbed and utilized by the body. Consider that if you need 130 grams of protein per day, and a piece of lean steak has 30 grams of protein, you can imagine how much food you must eat to keep up! Protein is also the most expensive nutrient you eat. If you tried to eat the amount of protein you need daily with lean meats not only do you need to have the appetite but the cost will add up quick!

There are different ways to utilize protein supplementation in your regimen. Even if you aren’t currently active or going to the gym, you can certainly still benefit from consuming more protein! When you are in our store, we will create a plan tailored to you that will outline how and when you consume a protein shake. It will be important and beneficial for you to follow up and scan your progress to see how consuming more protein is in fact improving your body composition.
