Most young athletes are likely consuming somewhere between 2,000 – 3,000 calories per day. That may sound like a lot, but when you consider that their bodies are burning anywhere from 4,000 – 5,000 calories by the time they have done their workouts or gone through a practice session you can see the caloric deficit. That caloric deficit is preventing his or her body from recovering and becoming stronger and better able to keep up with the competition. And that is just in one day. If that trend happens daily, by the time an entire week has passed your student athlete is burning far more calories than he or she is consuming.
